Using games and puzzles in the early childhood classroom can be seen not only as an enjoyable diversion but an opportunity for developing skills across a range of curriculum areas, especially literacy and maths, as well as other areas depending upon the focus of the particular game or puzzle.
Games and puzzles help to strengthen the classroom community by providing opportunities for children to:
- participate in a social situation
- get along and take turns
- understand and follow game rules
- accept game decisions; for example being out
- respond in positive ways to their own participation and the participation of others
- have fun
all of which are important life lessons.
